Fire safety in the workplace has changed with the introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order (Fire Safety) 2004 on the 1st October 2006.
The Order applies to most premises within the United Kingdom. The aim of the change is to simplify, rationalise and consolidate existing legislation. It will provide a risk based approach to Fire Safety allowing more efficient and effective control for all involved parties.
The Order places the responsibility of all aspects of Fire Safety on the “Responsible Person” and outlines all measures that must be taken to ensure the safety of all people they are directly or indirectly responsible for.
The Responsible Person will be held accountable. Under the Order you will be strongly advised to nominate a competent person, one that can demonstrate the appropriate skills and experience. Both or either party may be held responsible.
The Responsible Person must ensure that all Fire Safety arrangements are documented and ensure all employees are provided with all information related to Fire Safety. You must consult your employees with regard to all Fire Safety issues.

Responsible person – (A) this is in relation to the workplace, the employer, if the workplace is to any extent under his/her control; (B) in relation to any premises not falling within paragraph (A)- The person who has control of the premises in connection with the carrying on by him/her of a trade, business or other undertaking (for profit or not); or, the owner, where the person in control of the premises does not have control in connection with the carrying on by that person of a trade, business or other undertaking.
