Fire Safety, the basics

Staff fire safety training

With the introduction of new fire safety regulations in October of 2006 Staff fire safety training is now even more essential.

The new regulations are called the Regulatory Reform Order (Fire Safety) 2005 and apply to most premises within the United Kingdom. The legislation requires all employees receive adequate fire safety training at the time when they are first employed and on there being increased or changed risks and the training must Include suitable and sufficient instruction and training on the appropriate precautions and actions to be taken by employees and be repeated periodically.

Think of it as Team building

Use this training to your advantage; don’t think of it as another hassle or burden, think of it as a team building exercise. Carrying out a successful evacuation is a team event it relies on each individual knowing what to do and acting promptly. By carrying out regular fire safety training and evacuations you can create a good team bond. It can also be a fun and interesting morning off work doing something different.

Building fire safety

Having a well trained team working for you is only half the battle. It is no good providing regular fire safety training if you then don’t provide your employees with the correct fire safety equipment and protection.

The aim of the new regulations is to simplify, rationalise and consolidate existing legislation. It will provide a risk based approach to Fire Safety allowing more efficient and effective control for all involved parties. The new legislation requires the person with overall responsibility for the workplace carries out a fire safety risk assessment for their premises and if they employ more than 4 people document the significant findings. They must also meet these six provisions called general fire precautions:

1. Reduce the risk of fires on the premises and the risk of fire spreading.
2. Have means of escape from the premises
3. Ensure at all times escape routes and exits can be used
4. Have the correct firefighting equipment
5. Have a means for detecting and raising the fire alarm
6. Actions to be taken in the event of a fire including training of staff and measures to reduce the effects of fire

You also need to take into account any special requirements your individual business has and have measures in place to reduce there risk of contributing to a fire, such as the use of plant machinery and the storage of dangerous materials.
